Israeli Researchers Examine Effects of Cannabis on COVID-19

ISRAEL: Rambam Healthcare Campus is set to begin a "first of its kind trial" to study whether Cannabis could be helpful in treating the devastating immune system damage inflicted by COVID-19. Overseen by Dr. Igal Louria-Hayon, Director of Rambam's Center for Cannabis Research, the trials are slated to begin in coming months.

A Team of clinical researchers at Rambam have noted preliminary results indicate that cannabinoids (specifically their anti-inflammatory properties) may be effective in treating symptoms of COVID-19. The clinic has identified 15 different cannabis strains that they hope will be useful. Dr. Igal Louria-Hayon goes on to say: “We hope that by decoding the cannabinoid activity mechanism during inflammatory storms, we can treat COVID-19 patients where conventional drugs have failed."

“At Rambam, dozens of COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized in recent weeks, from whom blood samples were collected for clinical and research purposes,” Dr. Shlomit Yehudai-Reshef says, explaining that “despite the complexity and high risk, we found a safe way to separate the white blood cells, including the immune cells from verified patients.”
